Photographs of vegetation growing on residential buildings

Wild Concrete is a series about the resilience of nature in an urban environment. No matter how clever we are at dominating our environment with concrete structures, nature somehow finds its way to fight back. This reminds us that our concrete jungle would eventually have to give in to the force of nature if we let go, as captured by Romain's images of sprouting flowers and maturing trees in unlikely places. Focusing solely on the phenomena of trees sprouting from residential buildings in the busy districts of Hong Kong, Wild Concrete compares the living conditions between plants and humans, both growing in harsh surroundings. In this series the trees share the same exceptional qualities as their human counterparts: perseverance, diligence, and independence.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
