With the proliferation of personal digital devices, an explosion of imagery has flooded the media landscape; in today's interconnected virtual universe, every aspect of human existence is documented to such an extent that the boundary between private and public has become all but indiscernible, and subjects that would once have seemed unworthy of a simple snapshot are now mainstream fare on popular photo-sharing sites. Exploring this new reality, a set of forty different books was created, each featuring imagery pulled from the web. What makes the project interesting is not so much the material itself, which encompasses the full gamut of just about everything imaginable, but the selection process: rather than arrange frames around a particular theme or subject matter, only images bearing an identical default photo-identifier code assigned automatically by digital devices were chosen, working through the identifier sequence from one starting point to the last. This uncanny editorial approach transforms the material into something akin to pure poetic data: removed from its normal habitat of dating profiles and promotional announcements, the subtle manipulation reveals a larger reality that extends beyond the picture frame, offering a rare glimpse into the societal compulsions that fuel the creation and dissemination of digital imagery online.
