Introduction by Emilien Crespo
Designed by Jamie Allen Shaw and Roger Bywater

In the 1970s a new style of behind-the-scenes music photography was pioneered, documenting some of the biggest names in rock'n'roll. Characterised by candid shots of stars backstage, partying or on the road, readers of the major magazines of the day were offered a taste of what it was like to hang out with the era's icons, away from the studio. With the demise of that scene came an extended hiatus of almost twenty-five years; resuming in 2010, negatives were swapped for an online presence that quickly acquired a considerable following, alerting the attention of taste-makers. Now more active than ever, shooting a new generation of musicians, models and celebrities with the same exuberance, insight and fun that defined the early work, this latest book presents a contemporary collection of portraits taken in and around a Bel Air home, affectionately nicknamed after the title. Culled from shoots for a range of magazines, images of emerging bands are combined with improvised shots of established stars lounging around the lush surroundings, exploiting the intimacy of the location together with the spontaneity of the subjects to present all levels of a cultural elite with a personal flourish all its own. This publication marks the first time these recent photographs have been brought together in a single, limited edition volume.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
