Artists have experimented with film and pushed the boundaries of the moving image since the earliest years of the medium, from the expanded cinema movement of the 1960s and video art of the 1970s to the screen-based practices that dominate art today. Two Australian institutions, Adelaide's Samstag Museum of Art with the Adelaide Film Festival and Melbourne's ACMI, have driven major commissioning programs for new moving image works since 2009. This book, the first of its kind in Australia, documents those commissions and adds historical and newly commissioned critical reflections on the artistic outputs and on the role and history of commissioning, as a guide to the artworks and the institutional armature that underpins the moving image. It features work by Lynette Wallworth, Warwick Thornton, Shaun Gladwell, Daniel Crooks, Angelica Mesiti, David Rosetzky, Hossein Valamanesh, Trent Parke and Narelle Autio, Molly Reynolds and Rolf de Heer, Soda Jerk, Zanny Begg and others. The cover is white with the title in black capitals inside ruled boxes.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
