Shot over a decade on the Isle of Sheppey, where the artist was raised, this is a tender interrogation of how ties to family and place may fray and contort yet never break. The narrative heart is the home of the artist's paternal grandparents, ever central to family life. Beginning in 2014, the photographer instinctively documented her grandparents, their home and the island itself during each return visit, capturing a poignant and candid testament to their last years: mortality's march echoed through a residence rich in vital memories, its subdued dilapidation underscoring time's stubborn progress. Place is a further key theme, the tenacious hold it retains over us despite a fraught relationship to it. Photography proved a powerful healing tool, this instinctual project becoming a conduit for reconciliation, solace and growth: an enduring act of love.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
