A monk walks around Mount Hiei night after night to empty his consciousness and transform into a living Buddha. By the end, he has walked a distance equivalent to the circumference of the Earth. The artist went there to walk around the same mountain and find the wandering monk. He is interested in how perception is related to movement and the possibility of finding the meaning of life through something as seemingly futile as going round in circles.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
