Result of a PhD undertaking at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp

A photographer lands on a film set in Bollywood, wanting to document the decors as part of a wider doctoral undertaking. Posing as a background player, he infiltrates the set of a romantic terrorist film, but nothing goes as imagined: among thirty other background players, he winds up on the least photogenic set. During the long day's shoot he enters into conversations about the medium and society, with an overpopulated and poverty-stricken city and its surrealistic film industry as backdrop. This is about how doubt and incapacity drive the artistic process, a reflection on the practice of image-makers working along the boundaries of fiction and reality in a globalized world, where it is increasingly difficult to take a clear point of view.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
