A chronicle of transitions exploring an essential paradox of the natural world: that change is the only constant. Structured like ripples in a pool, the work begins with references to the past, examining an ancient emotional relationship with the world in terms of mythology and belief, and ends with today's scientific data-based view. Within these parameters relationships to place are explored, ranging from ten thousand years of human habitation to one summer during which everything changed. An analogue photographic record moves through sections: a farmyard in relation to a human life, grassland in a re-wilding process, a brook as a primal vein, a forest where old stories still wander, burial mounds referring to millennia of activity, and an age-old habitat of vegetation, all coming together in image and language. As a leitmotif throughout, extracted plant dyes and their names, taken from the very locations depicted, link the different time zones.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
