“A camera projects the sequence of images onto the screen, and so the audience witnesses the miracle of how a face defoliates. (...) Volker Gerling has created a new form of portrait art with his flipbooks," writes the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. His snapshots are poetic blinks of exactly 12 seconds in which his analog camera exposes an entire 35mm film of 36 shots. For the first time in an extensive personal exhibition, INN SITU shows the extraordinary portrait works of this artist between film, performance and classical black-and-white photography. In addition, new works by the German thumb cinematographer, as Volker Gerling calls himself, were created in the course of wanderings in Tyrol and Vorarlberg. Accompanying the exhibition in the series INN SITU at the BTV Stadtforum Innsbruck is this publication with an overview of his work.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
