In the street photography of Hansgert Lambers, which he took over seven decades in Barcelona, Berlin/GDR and West Berlin, Bologna, London, Ostrava, Paris and Prague, his interest in people, characterized by humanism and curiosity, is perceptible. Happiness, eroticism, sadness, and the hardships of life can be found in his pictures as states of existence belonging to the human condition. Whether his photographs capture the discrepancy between the anonymity of huge apartment complexes and the solitary presence of a child at play, or the intimate happiness of a rather inhospitable environment in Ostrava in the former ČSSR, his images tell stories that unfold in the minds of the viewers. Hansgert Lambers never devoted himself professionally to photography. Although he photographed almost all his life, his work is still to be discovered by many. Lambers describes himself as a "lover of photography" and devotes himself to it not only as a photographer, but also as a publisher (ex pose Verlag) and reviewer.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
