The illustrated book is a detailed photo-artistic description of Inge Morath's private living and working space in her residence in Roxbury, Connecticut, USA. The b/w photo reportage follows the tradition of documenting the studios of famous artists as an important source of their artistic work. The book title "After Work" refers to the fact that the photos were mostly taken after the work with Inge Morath on her illustrated books and exhibitions for Fotohof, and thus the traces of the activities are still visible in the pictures, but not the people. The first photos were taken in 1990, the last shortly before the final transfer of her studio in 2018. The retrospective, now published in book form on her 100th birthday, is a tribute to this important photo artist. Karl-Markus Gauß has already written texts for several of Inge Morath's books, and he visited her and her husband Arthur Miller in their estate in 1989. From this personal knowledge and experience of the place and his conversations with Inge Morath and Arthur Miller, he has written a text for the book. A short afterword by Kurt Kaindl and Brigitte Blüml-Kaindl explains and illustrates how this photo project came about.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
