Today, as digital images increasingly dominate the scene, both at amateur and professional level, photography seems to have reached a watershed in its now long history. This work sets out to give a complete picture of the subject, ranging from photographers to the latest technical information, from national schools to art criticism, passing through the cultural history of the image over the last 150 years. The entries are amply illustrated and include many unpublished or little-known images; many include suggestions for further reading, and the volumes are rounded off by a broad bibliography, a chronology of the history of photography and a list of relevant websites. The Italian edition adds fifty entries to the English original, focusing in greater detail on better-known Italian authors.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
