A royal road to that special time in 1972-1973 when the love generation in America was at its height. The US was reeling from years of war and turbulent social change, but the early 70s were still a time of innocence and exploration. Sweetheart shows the joyful vigour, fashion and play of a young crowd searching for fun, escape and identity in a roller rink on the outskirts of Tampa, Florida. Freshly returned from military service, the twenty-five-year-old Yates was young enough to relate to this crowd but no longer part of their world: his camera assumes nothing, and therefore reveals everything.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
