Essay by Tim Davis

Past Time explores the political and cultural idealisation of an America that never existed for many. It juxtaposes popular imagery from the past with photographs of contemporary life in places such as Dixon, Illinois, hometown of Ronald Reagan, and Mount Airy, North Carolina, hometown of Andy Griffith. Together they show how exclusionary misrepresentations of a mythological past-perfect, White America align with the current reality of iconic American towns, questioning the notion of “the good old days”.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
