Photographs, data and ephemera

One photographer’s tale of processing the COVID-19 pandemic through the lens of her camera. Part diary, part art exhibit, the book offers a glimpse into Beth Galton’s life, thoughts and art process as New York City weathered the storm of the global pandemic. Walking away from her well-honed skills as a commercial photographer, she created images that speak to her anxiety, to the uncertainty of the time and to how the crisis was handled. Compelled to find the humanity in the charts and graphs of cases, deaths and recoveries, she reached for symbols of life to balance the data: botanical matter scattered through the photographs, interwoven with jarring data and ephemera from this period.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
