Introduction by Pier Vittorio Tondelli
Quotations from Ovid to Joyce

The book is devoted to the passion for horse racing and gathers forty splendid shots by masters of contemporary photography, from Henri Cartier-Bresson to William Klein, from Lisette Model to Andreas Gursky. Each tells in his or her own style the atmosphere, the tension and the protagonists of the racecourses, and above all shows the faces and gestures of the spectators who suffer and live every moment of the races from the stands. The images are paired with a selection of quotations from Ovid to Marco Polo, Flaubert, Tolstoy, D’Annunzio and Joyce.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
