Ten years and eighty-seven days is the average time a condemned prisoner waits on death row in American prisons. Prisoners spend all their time alone, allowed just a small radio and a few books, lives squeezed into cells of six square metres that nonetheless stretch over a short lifetime and a very long wait. The photographer does not document or interpret these lives: she transfigures them, filtering them through her own sensibility. The more she concentrates on the material details, the small lines marking off the days of waiting, the jammed jigsaw pieces, the more her images tend towards abstraction. They tell of life, death and the feelings of prisoners waiting for the day of execution: a spiritual and intimate journey of men and women, populated by impossible thoughts, memories, pain, waiting and perhaps hope.
