In the book, as in the exhibition, the pictures of the great explorer and mountaineer form a single long travel diary, in a sequence that is not chronological but not random either, weaving together visions and memories. The images are accompanied by short notes from his own writings: from those published in the magazine Epoca from 1965 to 1978, from the memoirs in his books and from accounts of the lectures of his last years. With these notes Bonatti explained the meaning and value of each image and of each of his many adventures. After his last feat of extreme climbing, the solo winter ascent of a new route on the north face of the Matterhorn in 1965, he devoted himself to exploration and adventure as a correspondent for Epoca until 1979.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
