Jack London was the legendary writer of the early twentieth century: famous, prolific, controversial, revolutionary, one of the most fascinating figures to emerge from America. But not only that: he was also a photographer, who called his pictures "human documents", and the camera was his inseparable companion in adventures and reportages all over the world. The book presents a wide selection of his photographs with passages from his masterpieces of fiction and journalism, landmarks in which he became witness to great events of his time: The People of the Abyss (1903), a lucid sociological reportage on the outcasts of London’s East End; the Russo-Japanese War (1904), with two articles for the San Francisco Examiner, for which he was war correspondent; the San Francisco earthquake (1906), with the Collier’s Weekly article that opens "San Francisco is gone"; and The Cruise of the Snark, the diary of his crossing of the Pacific under sail. The pictures let the reader enter the writer’s prose more deeply and reveal the conscious, attentive eye of a photojournalist.
