Subtitled "Luoghi e volti del pensiero nelle foto Magnum", the book gathers pictures by the best-known Magnum photographers of the artists and intellectuals of the twentieth century at work in their studios. Leafing through it we discover the places where Francis Bacon, Constantin Brancusi, Giorgio de Chirico, Albert Einstein, Alberto Giacometti, Ernest Hemingway, Frida Kahlo, Primo Levi, Giorgio Morandi and Pablo Picasso, among others, worked, conceived and created, seen through the eyes of twenty of the agency’s most important photographers. Since the agency was founded in 1947 its members have turned their lenses on artists, writers, architects, film-makers and musicians, portraying not only their personalities but also the places and attitudes that fed some of the most important cultural currents in history. The pictures, shown in the book and in the exhibition in Pistoia, let us enter the studios of these thinkers. "To photograph a studio is to stop ideas while they are still swirling in the rarefied air, letting us know the invisible processes of the minds that conceived them" (Giulia Cogoli and Davide Daninos). Photographers: Abbas, Bruno Barbey, Ian Berry, Werner Bischof, René Burri, Robert Capa, Elliott Erwitt, Burt Glinn, Philippe Halsman, Erich Lessing, Herbert List, Susan Meiselas, Wayne Miller, Inge Morath, Paolo Pellegrin, David Seymour, Ferdinando Scianna, Dennis Stock and Nicolas Tikhomiroff.
