Hana yori dango, the Japanese saying goes: dumplings rather than flowers. It is said of people who go to hanami to see the cherry blossom and end up more interested in eating and drinking, and it means the practical wins over the beautiful. Liverani builds the book out of triptychs, three stolen moments gathered from around Japan and set side by side like the three balls on a dango skewer. The framing is clever and the editing never feels forced, so each triptych holds on its own and also inside a longer, evocative run. It won a jurors' pick at the LensCulture Street Photography Awards in 2018.
