Introductory text by Giovanna Calvenzi
Text by Paolo Giansiracusa on the history of stone cutting in Sicily
Text by Antonio Boscacci on the piode and granite of the prealpine valleys
Two journeys into marble quarries a long way apart: north, in Valtellina, Valmalenco and Valmasino, photographed by Marco Anelli, and south, in Sicily, photographed by Stefania Beretta. Quarries are unusual places and seductive ones, and the two bodies of work, strictly in black and white, give them the scale of immense cathedrals in which the only protagonist is stone: harsh, solemn, silent. The texts set the pictures against the history of cutting stone in Sicily and against the granite and roofing slabs of the prealpine valleys.
