The end point of a long project begun in 2013. Black, a Magnum photographer, drove close to 160,000 kilometres across the United States and came back with an unsparing account of the country now, looking in particular at the towns at the edge of things and at how precarious ordinary life has become there. What started as a story about isolated communities turned, over the years, into the portrait of a country splitting apart, with inequality widening. The series closed in 2020 with the last state, and the book carries the travel notebook alongside it, personal notes mixed with collections of found objects.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
