Provincial gigolos and leopard-clad ladies, rigorous businesswomen and young soldiers: you can meet all possible, and often impossible, kinds of characters while commuting on a train in Ukraine. The project depicts certain types of Ukrainian passengers as well as the stereotypes about them, with the boundaries between reality and fiction completely erased. It was inspired by Julie Poly's own observations but also by her real experience: she graduated from a railway university in Kharkiv and spent a whole summer working as a conductor.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
