Reflecting back on a quarter of a century, so much has changed: technologies emerged that fundamentally altered the way we do things, the methods by which we gather and disseminate information, how we communicate. The exhibition and this catalogue consider the notable technological restructuring of the medium, from the analogue film to the digital processes that now dominate — Photoshop 1.0 was launched on 19 February 1990.

Less perceptible, but perhaps more important, are the shifts in values attached to things and ideas: art, education, institutions and their ideologies. The catalogue samples work by makers who graduated over the past twenty-five years from New Zealand tertiary art education and who majored in the medium.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
