Heavy Volume One marks the first published release from The Heavy Collective. It draws on a diverse group of past contributors from the online platform, making the leap from the screen to a tangible connection between artist and paper. The volume features interviews, short stories and essays from photographers and writers including Bryan Schutmaat, Mark Steinmetz, Lucas Foglia, Stacy Kranitz, Tim Page, Kate Peters, Zhang Xiao, Sara Cwynar, Simon Davidson, Emmanuel Angelicas and Daniel Boetker Smith.

It is a significant showcase of contemporary work, a compendium of the relationships and the archive that The Heavy Collective has cultivated with some of the most important practitioners working today. The collective is an Australian online and offline platform dedicated to the showcase and discussion of contemporary work, hoping through publishing, exhibitions and online media to illuminate the practice of making pictures and its ability to represent or reflect our lived experiences.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
