As Paul Kooiker states: "The point is not where you go, but how you observe everything around you." For the award-winning Dutch photographer, the Romanian capital was a blank canvas — an unfamiliar place that allowed him to explore as a total stranger. What he discovered is a city in transformation, still marked by its Soviet past but at the same time committed to reinventing itself and moving towards a future that is as promising as it is uncertain. Kooiker conceived Fashion Eye Bucharest as « a visual diary that attempts to touch every corner of the city — not in a literal sense, but through its atmosphere and sensations ». Using exclusively his iPhone camera, he created a series of black-and-white images, focusing on subjects ranging from minute details to monumental architecture. These are interspersed with color portraits of young people from Bucharest's art scene — the only recognizable faces in the book. « There are too many unpredictable situations; it is impossible to create any kind of system,” explains Kooiker. «For me this is exactly the beauty of photography, because you never really know what you will get. There's always an element of uncertainty, and that's what makes it so interesting." Each volume of the travel photography series includes a wide selection of large-format images, accompanied by a biographical essay and an interview with the photographer or a critical text. After Louis Vuitton's City Guides and Travel Book collections, this third series dedicated to travel offers a "fashionable" vision of travel photography, presenting iconic cities, remote destinations and dream places through the distinctive gaze of the photographers involved.
