ORIGINALE – Einladungskarten 2005–2013 concerns Thomas Müllenbach's series “Halboriginale” (Semi-Originals), on which he worked from 2005 to 2013. The starting point was the countless invitation cards for exhibitions and art events that the artist found daily in his mailbox — concrete testimonies of the art world's everyday life. Müllenbach translated this everyday into his own pictures, in watercolour. From Dürer to van Gogh, from national to international artists, from figurative subjects to abstract compositions, the works play with recognizability. His “Semi-Originals” are neither plagiarism nor copy but idiosyncratic interpretations, or in the artist's words “hand made appropriation.” The reference to Appropriation Art is significant, since it so strongly shapes contemporary artistic practice. Each book cover is individually designed by Müllenbach and is unique.
