“A brand like a friend” is the motto of Georg Keller Unternehmungen (GKU). With this sham company, the artist Georg Keller infiltrates economic cycles and reflects on them. In 2016 he received the renowned Manor Art Prize and set out for a friendly takeover of Switzerland's largest department-store chain. What at first looks like a company history from below turns out to be the entanglement of an artistic one-man corporation with a Swiss retailer of some 3 billion in turnover and over 10,000 employees. Interviews with employees of various hierarchical levels form the first narrative strand; the second, visible only after the work is done, offers insight into Keller's practice. Two books in one, two independent stories that sharpen one's view of the other. Keller questions and illustrates economic structures, examining the mechanisms of globalization and seeking to make their effects on people and environment tangible. He tackles the explosiveness of these themes with seriousness, paired with a reduced aesthetic and a pinch of humour, working across installation, sculpture, video and performance in art, theatre and public space — all gathered under the roof of the GKU as a total work of art.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
