In 1978, together with Nikolaus Wyss, Walter Keller founded Der Alltag – Sensationen des Gewöhnlichen; in 1984, with Bice Curiger, Jacqueline Burckhardt and Peter Blum, the art magazine Parkett; in 1991 the photobook publisher Scalo – Books and Looks; and in 1993 he was involved in founding the Fotomuseum Winterthur. An impressive record — yet meagre compared with the overflowing creativity, curiosity, inspiration and energy with which Walter Keller, for almost 40 years, irritated, fascinated and motivated friends, foes, journalists, gallerists, exhibition-makers, photographers, publicists, designers and collectors. On the night of 1 September 2014, Walter Keller died completely unexpectedly. He was a publisher, motivator, editor, coach and networker, but above all an enchanting friend and rousing companion. The book does not seek to explain what he did, but how and why he turned his milieu into exhibits of his own world exhibition. Edited and written by people whose lives he changed and enriched, it is not a chronology but an impressionistic, selective and subjective compendium of his untamed originality.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
