As befits the approach of Swiss photographer Lukas Wassmann, the photobook W interweaves the banal with the significant. Wassmann's pictures meander between intimate snapshot, self-portrait, shaped nature, buildings and people, self-made furniture and commercial fashion or documentary photography. Perhaps it speaks of the insight that the “things of life” often play out on side stages. This is about the in-between, not Wassmann's money shots. W gathers photographs made between 2000 and 2018 that follow neither a temporal nor a thematic order. Rather, loose narratives spin out of associative image sequences, only to break off and perhaps pick up the thread somewhere else. Characters appear and disappear, choreographies of forms give way to chromatic analogies. What remains are not concrete things but atmospheric traces, a visual language of memory, moments from the stream of consciousness of an author with a highly idiosyncratic photographic eye.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
