Beni Bischof works irrepressibly and intuitively. Alongside drawings, collages, paintings, sculptures and installations, his laser-copied artist's magazines, self-published since 2005, attest to his eruptive creative urge. He translates spontaneous thoughts on social and political themes into bizarre and witty word- and sign-messages of disarming directness. The banality of everyday life is spared no more than dramas from the political agenda. Bischof de-glamourizes the noble veneer of supposed exclusivity and draws an abysmal picture of society. He appropriates his image and text material from pulp literature, fashion magazines, advertising and the virtual world. With Texte, a work that at first glance seems contrary now appears: pure text in paperback format. It is Bischof's personal portrait of his collection of e-mails, headlines, slogans and jokes. Texte appears on the occasion of the artist's solo exhibition at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
