The long-term photographic project The Dynamics of Dust grows out of Swiss photographer Philippe Dudouit's engagement with the Sahel-Sahara region, the southern edge of the Sahara. In his work Dudouit traces the newly emerging socio-political and economic ties of the once-nomadic population of this transnational territory. The former tourist paradise is groaning. The rise of Islamist terrorism in the region is blamed, but on closer inspection it rests on a dangerous cocktail of economic underdevelopment, poverty and state failure. Into the vacuum has settled a complex structure of militarized Islamists, human traffickers, and drug and weapons smugglers. Corruption gnaws at the fragile infrastructure, fuelled by the interests of large corporations in oil, gold and uranium. Here a lost generation of young people is growing up, often left with no choice but to flee — abroad or into crime. Dudouit's photographic sensibility is reflected in a deliberately chosen hybridity of analog and digital recording techniques: tableau-like large-format photography alternates with more fleeting digital images, some captured by prosumer cameras mounted on vehicles. The images are accompanied by GPS-based maps and Dudouit's field reports.
