Tokihiro Sato engages in creative photographic expression using pinhole cameras, camera obscura, and long exposures to explore themes such as light, time, space, and the body. This book is composed mainly of works set in Hachinohe(a city in Aomori Prefecture, Japan), taken over a period of six years. The "Magic Lantern" series was inspired by the "magic lantern," a device that uses candle or lamp light and a lens to project a picture on glass. While following the long-exposure photographic technique of the past, the new technique of superimposing scenes of festivals, fishing ports, scenic spots, etc., evokes a latent historical and cultural awareness in the region. The "Camera Lucida" series, which uses the structure of an optical device to project the view in front of you, and the "An Hour Exposure" series, in which the shutter is kept open for an hour, will be added to the exhibition. - Tokihiro Sato: Born in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture in 1957. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1981 with a B.F.A. in sculpture, and received his M.F.A. from the same university in 1983. He received the Mercedes-Benz "Art Scope" Grand Prix in 1993, the 65th Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Art Encouragement Prize in 2015, and the 31st Higashikawa Prize for Domestic Artists. Currently, he is a professor at the Department of Advanced Art Expression, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. He has participated in the 6th Havana Biennial (1997), the 9th Bangladesh Biennial (1999), and many other group and international exhibitions. And he had solo museum exhibitions such as Sakata City Museum of Art(1999), Art Institute of Chicago(2005), Frist Center for the Visual Arts(2010), Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography(2014), Tsuruoka Art Forum(2015).
