“I look at these pictures. Old photographs, taken in the late sixties in Hamburg and Stockholm. They bring back memories of kinship, fearfulness, undisguised curiosity and our solidarity. Photography was rarely the main issue. What counted then was meeting people and exploring different realities. The same things that still count. Now I see the pictures from a changed perspective. But they link together what was then with what is now. My questions of then are my questions of now. I recognise them, though the answers no longer carry the same weight. So I continue to ask my questions. Be wary of: Nicely formulated principles and truths. Useless feelings of guilt and sins of the past or while we’re at it, a photography resembling pretty adjectives. On the other hand, I like private diaries and family albums.” / Anders Petersen

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
