This essay sets itself the goal of inserting into the contemporary critical debate the scene of independent photographic publishing, which developed with great ferment and ever-greater success from the early 2000s. Starting from the state of the art of independent publishing in the post-digital era, the study analyses its different characteristics and expressions in photography. The phenomenon is analysed by highlighting the general characteristics, what is meant by independent publishing and what its first expressions were in history. Subsequently, the focus shifts to publishing modes - publishing houses and self-publishing, print media, the book, the magazine and the fanzine. In conclusion, there are conversations with some case studies of independent publishers.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
