With this photographic project, Carlo Pellegrini approaches the important theme of mental disability and art therapy with spontaneity, a marked sensitivity and a strong sense of self-criticism. The subject of asylums and the Basaglia law promulgated in 1978 is one already analysed in the past by many other important photographers: Luciano D'Alessandro, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Carla Cerati, to name only a few of the Italians. But Pellegrini works differently, with a personal language far from the classic reportage, and here he projects himself into the labyrinths of illness with participation, fulfilling the task he set himself and immersing himself in these environments at length.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
