In 2013 Alexander Gronsky photographed Norilsk, an isolated city in the Siberian north built by Gulag prisoners on the world's largest nickel deposits — the most northerly and the most polluted city in Russia. Working with a large-format camera and a muted, predominantly grey palette, Gronsky draws the viewer along receding perspective lines into the bleak, near-empty reality of an over-industrialised place, finding an almost romantic register in its dull extremity.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
