Shane Rocheleau's most ambitious monograph, Lakeside tackles the historical contradictions of white supremacy as they are manifested in present-day suburban Virginia. 'Lakeside, Virginia is a psychic landscape, a representation of countless spaces initially built to feign the American Exceptionalism writ to redact America's contentious reality,' Rocheleau says. 'Lakeside is also a place with eleven thousand people doing the best they can—ugly and beautiful things alike—while drowning in the reality that dreaming gets far less than its promise.' The book draws together Rocheleau's earlier inquiries into white American masculinity (You Are Masters of the Fish and Birds and All the Animals) and homelessness in the United States (The Reflection in the Pool) into a single, fuller-volume examination of a particular American suburb and the systems that produced it. The work is collected by the Museum of Modern Art, Vogue Italia Collection, Fondazione Teatro Regio di Parma and Tate Britain.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
