Weaves Parr's better known black-and-white work with previously unpublished images

Early Works gathers photographs made by Martin Parr in the first part of his career, mainly in the north of England and Northern Ireland. The images, made between his student years and the mid-1980s, include many of Parr's iconic early black-and-white pictures—familiar to readers of Bad Weather and A Fair Day—and weave them with over twenty previously unpublished frames, adding new breadth and perspective to a body of work that became one of the most influential in British documentary photography. Originally published to coincide with the retrospective of Tony Ray-Jones, a key influence on Parr, this second edition has been revised and updated. The pictures show working-class life, Methodist chapels, miners' galas, rainy seasides, terraced streets, dances and fairs—a Britain in the years before Parr's full move into colour with The Last Resort, recorded here with the close attention, dry humour and sympathetic eye that would later define his career.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
