Surf Fiction is a visual essay by Werner Amann, photographed mainly in 1990s Los Angeles and published by White Press in Freiburg in 2014. It juxtaposes documentary portraits, scenes and video stills with photomontages, drawing on a wide range of references, from film stills to neon signage to the beginnings of our hyper-connected image culture. Instinct and analysis intermingle across its pages as styles and techniques are coded and decoded, and compounded into a condensed statement.
