Aby Warburg’s final and unfinished project, the Mnemosyne Atlas of Images is one of the most fascinating works of twentieth-century thought. It represents the synthesis of the research that the great cultural historian had dedicated—through essays, lectures, and unpublished reflections—to classical tradition and the relationship between word and image. Composed of approximately 1,200 images varying in genre and size, it illustrates how the fundamental expressive values representing life in motion and the gesture of passions were transmitted from Antiquity, re-emerged during the Renaissance, and endure as living imprints down to contemporary culture. This edition, introduced by an analysis of the genesis and structure of Mnemosyne, features the original photographs taken in 1929 along with the reconstruction of all the Atlas plates, accompanied by clear and in-depth commentary resulting from the work of the editors and the Mnemosyne Seminar: an invaluable tool for understanding a work that even today stands as a fascinating enigma and an inexhaustible laboratory of ideas.
