The Danish photographer Torkil Gudnason has lived in New York since 1978 and built a highly successful career in fashion photography, shooting spreads for all prestigious magazines including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Marie Claire, Vanity Fair, Tatler, and Esquire as well as campaigns for many major cosmetics producers and fashion houses. Gifted with a sensitive eye for shapes and colors and an inexhaustible zest for experimentation, Gudnason has also created a distinctive oeuvre in art photography. For example, he arranged plants and blossoms in unconventional compositions he then captured in breathtakingly luminous pictures. “Rhapsody in All Colors” is a new series he shot in Cartagena, Colombia, in 2016 and now publishes in this book together with an essay by Max Blagg. A collection of portraits of local Miss Universe candidates and still lifes featuring fruits, flowers, and domestic articles, it is a singular document of a dreamlike place where time seems to have stopped.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
