First edition
First edition of Masahisa Fukase's Yohko, the eighth issue of the Sonorama Photography Selection series published by Asahi Sonorama and said to be Japan's first compact photobook. The book consists only of photographs of Yoko, his ex-wife, compiled mainly from works published intermittently in the magazine Camera Mainichi between 1964 and 1976. It appeared two years after their divorce and is as much about loss as about the joys of life: Fukase photographed her as his primary subject for more than a decade, to the point of violent obsession, yet the narrative of the images is a collaboration, since she is often complicit and poses for the camera. A beautiful and almost biographical work, albeit heavily edited, it is divided into seven sections, each opening with a photograph of ravens on a black page; some of the earliest raven images appear here, years before the standalone book Ravens. The cover shows Yoko in a kimono, gazing back through shattered glass. The photographs are accompanied by texts by Shoji Yamagishi, in Japanese and English, and by an afterword by Harumi Setouchi. The book was reprinted by AKAAKA in 2025.
