From his illustrations for André Breton’s Nadja to Le Gros Orteil and Les Mouches published in Georges Bataille’s Documents, Jacques-André Boiffard (1902–1961) made some of the most emblematic images of Surrealist iconography. After four years as Man Ray’s assistant he blended subversion, strangeness and dreamlike imagery in his own practice, with an uncompromising attitude and an obsession for analysis.
