Amma (mother in Tamil) is the seventh and final chapter of the long-term project "A Myth of Two Souls," which began in 2013 with the epic Ramayana as its primary starting point. Drawing inspiration from the iconography associated with the myth and its pervasiveness in Indian daily life, French photographer Vasantha Yogananthan traveled the legendary route from Nepal to India and then to Sri Lanka. First published by the Sanskrit poet Valmiki around 300 BCE, the Ramayana has been continually rewritten, reworked, and reinterpreted, and continues to evolve even today; the series thus presents itself as a modern reinterpretation of the myth.
Amma features Princess Sita, daughter of the Earth, and its main theme is the concept of purity. In this case, we are not at all faced with a happy ending; The conclusion of the Ramayana forces us to question Rama's behavior and his obedience to the rules imposed by a patriarchal society.
The images that compose Amma take us from the coast of Sri Lanka, to the city of Ayodhya, to the jungles of Bihar, India. Their vibrant colors recreate a world where civilization seems to gradually disappear, giving way to a purely metaphysical space.
The Ramayana has neither beginning nor end.
