The name David Bailey stands for photographs of beautiful people. In the course of his long career he has pointed his camera at the prettiest faces of his time. Bailey’s magnificent colour photographs form a very special pantheon of fine appearances. In the language of the fashion magazines, “beauty photographs”, they show the most successful models of their time, who represent the taste of the moment and the beauty ideal of an era. The “Bailey-esque girls”, as Vogue, one of his most important clients, called them, include the models Jean Shrimpton, Marie Helvin, Jerry Hall, Penelope Tree and Catherine Bailey. The volume contains the best of his colour photographs made since 1960, portraits of Indian dancers and of the “mud men” of Asaro, New Guinea, and his paintings, published here in book form for the first time.
