From the very first photograph by Douglas Kirkland the viewer learns unmistakably what to expect from this picture book: “MADEMOISELLE – PRIVÉ” on a door, and these two words reveal much about the photographer’s perspective on his model: Coco Chanel in summer 1962. Kirkland, then working for Look in Paris, accompanied Coco Chanel with his camera on her way from her suite at the Ritz, photographed her in her apartment, in Studio 31 on the Rue Cambon and at a fashion show.
