In 1974 Nina Hagen complained that her boyfriend had forgotten the colour film. At the same time, conceptual artists put photography on the dissecting table to analyse its aspects: the popular, the social, the technical and the artistic. The volume tells a wild, ironic and at times melancholic history of photography from the artists’ point of view, one that unfolds close to the photographic material but also looks at the longings and obsessions people connect with photography. The thematic image chapters, with works from the last 50 years, deal with the material conditions of the medium, formats that have become obsolete such as the photo album or postcard, and the new digital world of photography.
