Fotografien 1919–1953 accompanies the world’s first retrospective of the photographer Willi Ruge at c/o Berlin. Car races at the AVUS, a landing in the high mountains, the Spartacus uprising, unrest in Upper Silesia, a self-portrait in free fall. Whether as war reporter or gunner, advertising filmmaker or entrepreneur, Ruge is part of the social upheavals of the early twentieth century and fascinated by the technical possibilities of modernity. He is no quiet observer on the sidelines but in the midst of events, often so much at the centre that he appears in the picture himself as an actor.
